Sailboat Awning Selection: Size, Shade & Fit

Choose a sailboat awning around the area you want to shade and the way the boat can support it. Start by deciding whether the item will cover a cockpit, deck section or another defined area.

Draw the required coverage

Mark the outline, length and width, overhead clearances and nearby boom, mast or rail fittings. Check whether the selected drawing describes fabric dimensions, mounting spacing or both.

Compare actual fabric specifications

Materials described as polyester, acrylic or coated fabrics can differ in construction, finish, weight and intended use. Compare the selected material's technical information rather than ranking every fabric by fiber name alone. Another brand's material data or example photo does not identify the fabric in a FlickerMarine product.

Plan fitting and stowage

Check supports, attachment points, straps, openings and the space needed to fit or remove the awning. Confirm the instructions for the selected design and whether the boat's existing frame is suitable.

Confirm contents and care

Check fabric-only versus kit contents, color, model dimensions and any required accessories. Read cleaning, drying, storage and operating instructions. Confirm any claimed water, UV or wind performance for the actual product rather than assuming it from the appearance of an installed example.
