Marine Canvas Cleaning & Repair: An Overview

Jun 03,2024 | FllickerMarine

Marine canvas is not one uniform material. Before cleaning, coating or repairing it, identify the fabric, backing, finish, stitching and any windows or fittings included in the product.

Start with the care instructions

Use the cleaning method, products, dilution and drying instructions specified for the actual material. Do not assume that a cleaner allowed on one fabric is suitable for another coating, lining or assembled cover.

Check the whole item

Inspect seams, closures, clear panels, labels and attachment points before choosing a treatment. Ask the supplier when the fabric identity or compatibility of a cleaner is uncertain.

Decide whether a treatment is appropriate

Do not routinely add a waterproofing or UV-protectant spray to every canvas product. Check whether retreatment is needed and which treatment is approved for the exact fabric and finish. Follow the treatment's application and curing instructions.

Match the repair to the damage

Assess the fabric, seam or fastening that is damaged before choosing a patch, adhesive or stitching repair. Obtain specialist advice for structural areas, large tears or a repair whose compatibility is uncertain.

For an example of material-specific guidance, see Sunbrella's marine canvas cleaning instructions. They apply to the named Sunbrella material and should not be transferred automatically to GELAY or other fabrics.
