Mainsail Covers: Exposure & Storage Considerations
Jun 11,2024 | FllickerMarine
A mainsail cover should match the shape of the stowed sail and the hardware around it. Review the selected cover's measurement drawing with the sail arranged as it will be stored.
Measure the stowed arrangement
Use the drawing's reference points for cover length, mast-end height or opening, and the dimensions around the sail bundle. Boom length alone does not describe every part of the required fit. Note any equipment that the cover must pass around.
Compare cover designs
Different cover families may have different mast openings, profiles, closures and installation methods. Compare the selected model's shape and size table rather than treating all covers of a similar length as interchangeable.
Review the fabric and construction
Check the exact fabric, seams, lining if present and fastening details. Ask for the product-specific basis of any required exposure or water-resistance rating. A cover's suitability depends on its construction and fit as well as the fabric specification.
Plan inspection and storage
Follow the sailmaker's and cover manufacturer's instructions for fitting, cleaning, drying and storage. Inspect fastenings and contact points for wear or trapped debris. Do not assume that putting a cover over a wet or damaged sail resolves its maintenance needs.
