Custom Boat Helm Covers: Sizing & Selection

A custom helm cover enquiry should describe which equipment is to be covered. A wheel-only storage cover, a wheel-and-pedestal cover and a complete console cover require different measurements.

Define the covered area

List the wheel, pedestal, console, screens, handles and other fittings that will sit beneath or pass through the cover. Take front, side and rear photos so the outline and obstructions are visible.

Make a labelled measurement sketch

Include the wheel's outside diameter and depth, the overall width, height and length of the covered equipment, and the locations of openings or projections. Mark the measurement points and units clearly. On the standard D-coded wheel-cover listing, D80, D85 and D90 refer to 80, 85 and 90 cm diameter; a custom console cover requires more information than that diameter alone.

Discuss the closure and removal route

Indicate where the cover can be opened, removed and secured. Ask about zipper, strap, hem and opening arrangements for the proposed design. A storage cover should not be described as a rim grip or as equipment that improves steering control.

Confirm the final specification

Review the agreed drawing, material, color, openings and contents before ordering. Ask for the applicable production and delivery information for the quotation rather than assuming a standard item and a custom item follow the same process.
