How to Measure for a Custom Winch Cover
Oct 25,2026 | FlickerMarine
When ordering a custom winch cover, one of the most important steps is getting the measurements right. Many customers know they need a cover, but they are not sure exactly what to measure or how to do it correctly.
The good news is that it is very simple if you use the right method. To make sure your custom winch cover fits properly, you only need two key measurements:
-
The circumference of the base
-
The height
Use a soft measuring tape
Please use a soft measuring tape when measuring your winch.
A soft tape can wrap around the shape of the winch and follow the outer surface much more accurately. This gives a better measurement for a custom-fit cover.
Measure the base circumference
To measure the base circumference, wrap the soft measuring tape all the way around the bottom part of the winch.
Please make sure that:
-
The tape stays flat against the surface
-
It is not pulled too tight
-
It is not left too loose
-
It goes around the part that the cover actually needs to fit over
This measurement is much more accurate than trying to estimate the size another way.
Measure the height
The second measurement is the height.
Measure from the bottom of the area you want covered to the top of the area you want the cover to protect.
If your winch has any raised parts or unusual shapes, make sure you measure the full height of the section that needs to be covered.
Do not measure the diameter with a ruler
This is a very common mistake.
Please do not use a straight ruler to measure the diameter of the winch.
A diameter measurement can be very different from the actual circumference, and even a small error can make the final cover fit poorly. Winches are not always perfect circles, and many have curves, edges, or uneven shapes that make ruler measurements inaccurate.
For this reason, circumference is the correct measurement to provide, not diameter.
Additional tips for accurate measurements
To help make sure your custom winch cover fits well, please also keep these points in mind:
-
Measure at least twice to confirm the result
-
Make sure you send the unit clearly, such as cm or inches
-
Measure the winch in its normal installed condition
-
If there are any unusual shapes, handles, or protruding parts, let us know
-
If possible, send a photo of the winch along with the measurements
A photo can help confirm that the measurements match the actual shape of your winch.
Final reminder
For a custom winch cover, please send us:
-
Base circumference measured with a soft measuring tape
-
Height
-
Photos if available
And again, please do not measure diameter with a ruler, because it is not accurate enough for custom sizing.
With the correct measurements, we can make a winch cover that fits much better and provides better protection.
